Mid-May is arguably the best week of the year to be in Burgas, and it is not the week most visitors picture when they hear "Black Sea resort". It is warm rather than hot, green rather than parched, and the coast has not yet filled up. It is also, reliably, changeable.
The numbers
Averages for Burgas in May:
| Average daytime high | around 21 °C |
| Average night-time low | around 13 °C |
| Sea temperature | around 15–17 °C |
| Rain days | 8–9 across the month |
| Total rainfall | 40–55 mm |
Averages hide the spread, and in May the spread is wide. A warm, still week in Burgas can sit at 26–28 °C in the afternoon and feel like early summer. A cool one can spend three days at 15 °C under grey skies with a wind off the sea. Both are entirely normal for the same fortnight, and one does not predict the other.
What it feels like day to day
Mornings are fresh — genuinely cool by the water, often with sea mist that burns off by mid-morning.
Afternoons are the good part: warm, bright, comfortable for walking, with long light. The sun in mid-May at this latitude is stronger than it feels, especially with sea reflection, and people burn on the first day without noticing.
Evenings drop quickly once the sun is down, and the wind matters more than the temperature. A 15 °C evening with a breeze off the water while you are standing in a queue is a different proposition from 15 °C inland. This is the single thing people get wrong about packing for a coastal contest.
Rain in May tends to arrive as showers and short thunderstorms rather than all-day drizzle. It clears. But 8–9 rain days in a month means there is a fair chance of catching one in a nine-day week.
The sea
At 15–17 °C the water is swimmable for the determined and bracing for everyone else. You will see locals in it. You will also see many more people sitting next to it with a coat on. If swimming matters to you, this is what a wetsuit is for, or a hotel pool.
What the sea will absolutely be is beautiful. The beaches from Burgas up to Pomorie and down to Sozopol are wide, clean and, in May, close to empty.
Wind
Worth its own note. The Burgas bay gets a steady onshore breeze many afternoons and it can be strong. It rarely spoils a day, but it decides whether you want a windproof layer. Anyone who has stood on the pier in the Sea Garden on a breezy May evening knows why this is on the list.
What to pack
For a week around the contest:
- Layers, not a big coat. A t-shirt for the afternoon, a long sleeve, and a light windproof or rain jacket. That combination covers almost every May day here.
- One properly warm layer — a fleece or jumper — for evenings and for standing in a queue outdoors after dark.
- Comfortable walking shoes. Burgas is flat and walkable and you will do more of it than you plan, especially between the arena and anywhere else.
- A compact umbrella or a hooded jacket. Showers are short; being caught in one is not a problem if you can cover up.
- Sunscreen and sunglasses. Not optional. The May sun plus sea reflection catches people out every year.
- Swimwear if you are brave, or if your accommodation has a pool.
- Something you would wear to a show — a nine-show week has more social evenings in it than you think.
- A power bank. A show night is a long day of photos, maps and messages, and the arena area will be a congested cell.
Planning around it
The practical version: assume you will spend meaningful time outdoors and standing still, in the dark, at around 13–15 °C, possibly with wind. Everything else in a Burgas May is a pleasure, and the weather will not be the reason a day goes wrong.
If you want an outdoor day that is not weather-dependent, the things to do and day trips pages have wet-weather options — Nesebar's churches, the Burgas museums and the mineral baths at Pomorie all work perfectly well in the rain.
